Venter strike sees Stars past Arrows

Serame Letsoaka picked up his first league win with Free State Stars as they edged out Golden Arrows 1-0 in their Premiership encounter at the Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu on Saturday.

The only goal of the game in windy encounter in Durban came in the 26th minute through influential forward Danny Venter.

Letosaka, who took over last month, has now guided Ea Lla Koto above Bloemfontein Celtic and Platinum Stars to 12th place in the league and four points clear from the drop zone.

Arrows, meanwhile, continue to endure a rough patch which has seen them win only once in their last eight games.

After Knox Mutizwa and Kudakwashe Mahachi had half-chances early on, Vuyani Ntanga squandered their best opening when he failed to beat Congolese goalkeeper Christoffer Mafoumbi in a one-on-one opportunity in the 19th minute.

It was a costly miss as Stars then went ahead courtesy of Venter’s strong drive from a tight angle on the right, as his free-kick left goalkeeper Nkosi Gumede with no chance.

It was mainly the visitors thereafter as Mohammed Anas was brilliantly denied by a one-handed Gumede stop after the ball was floated over from the right.

Then with less than 30 minutes to play, Moeketsi Sekola struck the crossbar with almost no one to beat after another inviting cross from the right.

And with eight minutes to play, the South Africa international forward could have buried the game, after Sinethemba Jantie threaded him through on the right, but Nkosinathi Mthiyane was at hand to make a goal-saving challenge.
