Stars share third place at Wits tournament

This Saturday Free State Stars, Platinum Stars and Baroka were hosted in a four-team tournament held by Premiership Champions Bidvest Wits in preparation for the new season.

The first game of the day saw Ea Lla Koto pitted up against Gavin Hunt’s star-studded Students and they took the lead as early as the tenth minute.

Wits winger Vincent Pule broke the deadlock with a wonderfully executed free-kick that sailed over the head of goalkeeper Olivier Kwizera – leaving him with no chance.

However, five minutes before the break Stars fan-favorite Danny Venter grabbed an equaliser with a belter of a set-piece that sailed past Bafana Bafana shot-stopper Darren Keet.

Nonetheless, English forward James Keene went on to win the encounter for the home side with a clinical header inside the area in the second-half of the game.

In the Second match of the day between Baroka and Platinum Stars and a goal in each half by Gift Motupa and Robin Ngalande respectively saw Bakgaga down Dikwena 2-0.

The third and fourth place match between the two Stars’ outfits ended in a 1-1 draw; with Thabo Maphakisa opening the scoring before Benson Shilongo’s goal saw the two sides share the spoils in a high-tempo pre-season fixture.

And in the final game of the day, Baroka shocked the Clever Boys by inflicting a 2-0 defeat over the reigning league title holders.
