Free State Stars took part in a pre-season friendly tournament that was played at VUT Isak Steyl Stadium at the weekend.
Participating teams included Ea Lla Koto, National First Division newcomers TS Galaxy, as well as Mbombela United and Menza Group (a team made out of Vaal players, who are seeking professional contracts).
In the first match, Stars took on TS Galaxy and the newcomers did not show any respect for the Nedbank Cup champions. They scored two goals before going into half-time.
Ea Lla Koto came back in the second half with all guns blazing and, two minutes in, Harris Tchilombou reduced the deficit to one goal.
Ten minutes later it was again Democratic Republic of the Congo born Tchilombou who netted, for his brace and the equaliser for Stars.
After 90 minutes, the score was two-all and had to be decided with a penalty shootout.
Ea Lla Koto ultimately won 4-2 courtesy of Eleazar Rodgers, Bengali Keita, Paulus Masehe and Sinethemba Jantjie, who all netted from the spot.
Goalkeeper Badra Ali Sangare pulled off two brilliant stops to deny Galaxy a place in the final.
Meanwhile, Menza and Mbombela played to a one-all draw but Mbombela went through to the finals with Ea Lla Koto (by virtue of being an NFD team)
The closely contested final between Ea Lla Koto and Mbombela ended 1-0 to Stars courtesy of a long range strike from midfielder Katlego Mokhuoane, whilst Menza and TS Galaxy played to a goalless draw.
