Free State Stars have shown some promising early form after winning the inaugural Dihlabeng Spectacular Tournament hosted in Clarens this past weekend.
The four-team spectacle included Ea Lla Koto, a local invitational side, along with two Lesotho top-flight outfits Ditshilo FC and Sandawana FC.
Sandawana kicked off the opening game with a 2-1 victory over Clarens XI, as Koloti Roboame and Rethabile Rasthuntse scored goals in each half. Former Free State Stars striker Tebello Mofokeng grabbed the consolation for the home team.
The second game saw Stars cruising easily past Ditshilo with a 6-2 result. Ghanaian striker Muhammed Anas grabbed four goals whilst midfielder Danny Venter and trialist Didier Lebri grabbed a goal apiece.
And in the final; Ea Lla Koto met Sandawana for the second time this week, having thrashed them 3-0 in a warm-up fixture at the club’s development ground. This time around the ruthless Stars hammered Sandawana 6-1 to walk away winners of the Dihlabeng Spectacular Tournament.
The tournament was organised by the office of the speaker in the Dihlabeng Local Municipality David Lengoabala, and he beamed with excitement over the running of the successful inaugural pre-season tournament.
Lengoabala added that next year the tournament will be bigger and better and promised that they will continue to support teams like Free State Stars going into the new season.
“Our aim is to promote sports within Dihlabeng area and we thought of the only way we can getter more support and that was through football,” Lengoabala said.
“Next season we not going to have a Clarens Invitation but Dihlabeng Squad of which players will be selected in all 5 of our towns incorporated by Dihlabeng.”
