Free State Stars avenged their recent defeat to Highlands Park by recording a 2-0 win in their last-32 Nedbank Cup fixture at Goble Park on Saturday evening.
Serame Letsoaka’s men looked determined to get one over the Lions of the North, who beat them 1-0 in a league fixture a mere six days ago.
However, Gordon Igesund’s side nearly took the lead early on through midfielder Brandon Theron.
The former Milano man found himself in acres of space with only goalkeeper Thela Ngobeni to beat but unselfishly looked for a pass instead of going for glory – which ended the opportunity to put the vistors ahead.
Former Vasco da Gama goalkeeper Marlon Heugh who earned a rare start in goals for Igesund’s side was kept busy for the remainder of the half, with a barrage of set-pieces and later displaying an incredible reflex save to deny Mohammed Anas from point blank range.
However, with seconds left in the first-half, Heugh was finally beaten by Nhlanhla Vilakazi – which proved to give the home side momentum for the next 45 minutes.
And Letsoaka’s charges proved to take advantage of the added impetus, with tireless midfielder Goodman Dlamini doubling the advantage and booking a place in the last-16 of the prestigious cup competition.
