Benni McCarthy’s Cape Town City showed a clinical touch in front of goal as they recorded a 5-0 victory over Ea Lla Koto in the Mother City on Wednesday evening.
Coach Nikola Kavazovic was targeting a repeat performance after picking up his first win at the helm with a 2-1 triumph over Maritzburg United last Wednesday.
However, the Citizens headed into the encounter on the back of a four-match unbeaten run, having scored seven goals in the process. And, City continued their rich vein of goal-scoring form as they broke the deadlock late in the first half before adding four more after the half-time break.
Roland Putsche opened the scoring in the 37th minute with a well placed header from close range, before notching his second of the evening from the penalty spot on 52 minutes.
City youngster Gift Links netted a third for the home side 11 minutes later, before Siphelele Mthembu got in on the act to make it 4-0.
Links rubbed further salt in the wounds of Stars two minutes from time after bagging his second goal, and a disappointing evening for Ea Lla Koto was exacerbated in stoppage-time as Tariq Fielies received his marching orders for a second bookable offence.
Free State Stars will now turn their attentions towards next Saturday’s clash with Richards Bay in the Nedbank Cup round of 32.
Ea Lla Koto are the reigning Nedbank Cup champions, having recorded a 1-0 victory over Maritzburg United at Cape Town Stadium in May, last year.
