Free State Stars have the opportunity to claim a major scalp against Mamelodi Sundowns in Wednesday’s Premiership clash at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
It’s an opportune time for Stars to face Sundowns as they suffered a shock 2-0 loss to Bakgaga last Saturday and have now fallen out of three major competitions in 2018/19 which includes the CAF Champions League, the MTN8 as well as the TKO.
Nonetheless, coach Pitso Mosimane insists that winning the league remains the ultimate objective for his side. He said: “Will you win everything? No. It’s okay. It’s a league cup. We’ve got to move on. We’ve got the league, which is more important.”
Stars though come into the contest in solid form having drawn the last two league matches to Golden Arrows and Black Leopards respectively.
However, coach Luc Eymael does not under-estimate the challenge ahead, telling Kickoff: “You know very well that they can put two different squads or three different squads of a very high level on the pitch.
“I’m sure that Sundowns will try to react because firstly it is a big team. It’s not possible to lose two games in a row.”
Ea Lla Koto are in eighth position on 13 points whereas Downs are in sixth, one point ahead. However, the 2016 African champions have a number of matches in hand due to earlier Champions League commitments.
In team news, Stars captain Paulus Masehe is out while Sundowns could be missing up to eight players, in Denis Onyango (Achilles), Ali Meza (knee), Anele Ngcongca (Achilles), Thela Ngobeni (shoulder), Rivaldo Coetzee (hamstring), Cuthbert Malajila (knee), Sibusiso Vilakazi (ruptured Achillles) and Anthony Laffor (knee).
Wednesday’s match kicks off from 19:30 in Pretoria.
