Siphelele Mthembu bagged a second half equaliser to cancel out Percy Tau’s early opener for a 1-1 draw against Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versveld on Wednesday night.
Sundowns started well with some high-tempo passing and were ahead after four minutes as Leandro Sirino laid on for Tau to curl home with his left foot.
It was a relatively open game thereafter as Jeremy Brockie rolled his strike wide after being set up by Khama Billiat and Nhlanhla Vilakazi came close to beating Denis Onyango.
Brockie was involved again as he peeled away at the far post ahead of a header at the back stick, but Badra Ali Sangare was well placed to a make a magnificent fingertip save.
Stars upped the tempo in search of an equaliser, and Harris Tchilimbou came agonisingly close with a glancing header that was just wide, as Sangare again denied Brockie with some excellent goalkeeping.
Mthembu then did well to turn inside the box, with the half winding down, but saw hit shot hit the side-netting.
But he leveled matters with 53 minutes on the clock after a fine burst by Tchilimbou on the right – who picked out Mthembu, to finish well after an initial block by Motjeka Madisha.
Chances were few and far between in the second stanza, as Tiyani Mabunda was forced to shoot from distance just after the hour mark which Sangare once more dealt with, while in the closing stages, Vilakazi was unfortunate not to be awarded a penalty after a challenge from Onyango.
