Free State Stars showed real grit and determination as they mounted a second-half comeback to clinch a 2-1 win against Maritzburg United at Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The Team of Choice, bottom of the Premiership standings heading into the midweek clash, were determined to put some points on the board following a run of three straight defeats.
Ea Lla Koto, meanwhile, had a similar record after four consecutive defeats, meaning this clash was a must-win for both sides.
Maritzburg drew first blood, though, Deolin Mekoa finding the back of the net deep in first-half injury time.
However, Stars posed a real threat every time they broke forward with the ball, and after failing to make their chances count in the first stanza, they found their shooting boots after the break.
Relebogile Mokhuoane netted the crucial equaliser in the 74th minute, back-heeling the ball ove the line from close range.
And, the come-from behind victory was secured in style on 81 minutes, second-half substitute Sinethemba Jantjie smashing a half-volley into the back of the net from the edge of the box.
The positive result gives Stars some breathing room in the bottom half of the Premership table as they are now four points clear of the dreaded drop zone.
Next up for Nikola Kavazovic’s men is a Premiership clash with Cape Town City at Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday, 16 January.
