AmaZulu came back from an early goal down to beat Free State Stars 2-1 in a Premiership clash at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
A freak own-goal from Mbongeni Gumede gave the visitors a fourth-minute lead, but Usuthu fought back with second-half goals from Emiliano Tade and Mhlengi Cele to earn the comeback win.
Ea Lla Koto were gifted the lead in bizarre fashion just four minutes into the contest in Umlazi. A sloppy back-pass from Gumede caught Moeneeb Josephs on his heels and the ball rolled into the bottom right-corner of the net before the goalkeeper could intervene.
Ten minutes later, Josephs would come to the hosts’ rescue. Eleazar Rodgers’ square pass set up Cesaire Gandze with the goal at his mercy, but the gloveman was off his line in a flash and denied the midfielder with a smart reaction save.
Stars had an excellent chance to double their lead in the 40th minute when Goodman Dlamini’s through ball caught the Usuthu defence out and sent Harris Tchilimbou on goal. The striker nicked the ball beyond Josephs, but with two defenders applying pressure he struck the left post.
Cavin Johnson’s side would find an equaliser nine minutes into the second half. Butholezwe Ncube sent a clever ball into the feet ofTade and the Argentine took one touch to set himself before curling the ball into the back of the net with his left foot.
Ten minutes from time Usuthu almost completed the turnaround. Mabhuti Khenyeza was picked out by a long ball from Gumede, but his chipped effort went wide of the goal.
However, they would clinch a winner two minutes from time. Thembela Sikhakhane sent in a superb cross from the right that Cele hit first time on the volley to secure all three points.
