Free State Stars claimed the 2018 Nedbank Ke Yona Challenge with a 2-1 defeat of the Nedbank Ke Yona Team at Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa on Sunday.
Yusuf Jappie opened the scoring for Stars on five minutes before an equaliser from Lunathi Mdatyulwa just a minute later to level the tie.
Eleazar Rodgers though came off the bench to head home the winner with 75 minutes on the clock.
It was a thrilling encounter against the amateur side that featured players from seven provinces.
Speaking after the game, Ea Lla Koto head coach told Kickoff: “We played very well in the first half and we created 10 big chances in the box.
“One very nice goal of Yusuf Jappie but we created a lot of chances and the goalkeeper made a brilliant save on the header of [Harris] Tchilimbou.”
On the Ke Yona Team, he added: “We had good opposition with these boys. They did well these young boys and they were well organised. But we knew we would score the second goal because I don’t know how many chances we created in the second half.”
