All square in KwaMashu

Golden Arrows and Free State Stars played to a 1-1 draw at the Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu on Saturday.

After a goalless first half, Nkanyiso Mngwengwe’s own-goal gifted Ea Lla Koto the lead after 56 minutes. Siphelele Magubane’s persistence resulted in an equaliser after 72 minutes to set up a tense finish.

Neither side though was able to find a winner with the result leaving both teams as they were before kick-off – the home side in 11th and the away side in fifth.

Harris Tchilimbou swung in a few early corner as Stars threatened from the off.

At the other end, Arrows had 16 minutes to wait for their first opportunity, which came when Lerato Lamola turned curled an effort wide. The home side then had a penalty appeal waved away for what would have been an innocuous decision for handball.

Stars ended the half strongly although Danny Venter did come close with a shot he pulled over the bar.

The game was lively after half-time with Arrows striking the bar first through Jabulani Shongwe after a positive attacking move. But Stars then hit the lead when Patrick Phungwayo’s cross from the left was diverted high into his own net by Mngwengwe.

Arrows though drew level when Lamola’s lay-off resulted in Magubane poking home to set up a tense finish.

Both sides continued to press for the winner with Arrows substitute Knox Mutizwa forcing a sprawling save from Badra Ali Sangare late on.
