Bloemfontein Celtic claimed the bragging rights on the day as they held off a late fightback by Free State Stars to claim a 2-1 win in their ABC Motsepe League clash on Saturday afternoon.
Celtic started the match on the front foot and very nearly claimed the lead in the 14th minute as Lefa Wesi did well to shield his marker before firing narrowly wide of the target.
The first 20 minutes certainly belonged to the visitors as they spread the ball forward with purpose.
Stars eventually fashioned their first real attempt of the game in the 30th minutes, but striker Jarome Jonkers saw his goal-bound shot snapped up with relative by Celtic’s goalkeeper.
Jonkers was made to rue that missed chance as Celtic went on to claim the lead in the 38th minute. The keeper played the ball straight downfield and Robert Smith took two touches to steady himself before slotting home.
And, they doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time following a mix-up at the back, Sanele Shange intercepting an attempted pass by Stars’ keeper before firing a shot into the back of the net.
Celtic started the second half as they had the first, bombing forward at every opportunity as they went in search of a third goal.
However, Stars showed real grit and determination to claw one back halfway through the second stanza to setup a tense finish to the encounter.
Stars were fired up, throwing everything at Celtic in search of a equaliser, but it was not to be as Celtic walked away with the three points.
